In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Zelensky said Russia depends on India and, at times, Turkey and China for its economy. He said that if these countries stopped trading energy with Russia, Moscow would be forced to halt the war.
Zelensky said energy sales to China, India and Turkey are supporting the Russian economy. According to the Ukrainian president, cutting off this source of revenue would be enough to put pressure on Moscow because Russia would no longer have the money needed to continue the war.
Zelensky told The Wall Street Journal that if US President Donald Trump increases pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, while China and India stop buying Russian oil, the war would end.
In the same interview, Zelensky said Trump did not ask him during their meeting on Tuesday to stop bombing Russian oil refineries. However, he acknowledged that US allies had previously raised the issue over concerns about rising energy prices.
Zelensky has arrived in New York with First Lady Olena Zelenska and his diplomatic team to attend the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Ending Russia's ongoing war remains a key focus of his visit.
During his trip to New York, Zelensky is scheduled to hold around 20 meetings. He said Ukraine's first priority during the meetings is to move forward on the path to peace and protect the lives of its people.
Zelensky shared details of his visit in a post on the social media platform X. He wrote, "I have arrived in New York with First Lady Olena Zelenska and my diplomatic team to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Around 20 meetings are scheduled here. These include, in particular, meetings with the US President, European leaders, US Senators and members of the House of Representatives, heads of international organisations, major US companies and think tanks."
Zelensky's remarks place energy trade and international pressure at the centre of his efforts at the UN General Assembly to advance peace and protect Ukraine's people while the war with Russia continues.
